Suffering from kidney stones is a common health problem. It is identified by pain in the back, belly or nearby body parts, blood in the urine, and fever. Some patients also report acute pain during urination. If you find these symptoms in you or your dear ones, you must not avoid it and immediately consult a good urologist for diagnosis and treatment of kidney stone.
In some cases, a kidney stone can be as small as a rice grain or sometimes it may be of the size of a 5 mm. Small sized kidney stones can pass through the urinary tract with little or no pain. But, in the cases where the size of kidney stones are big, clinical intervention in the form of treatments is required. Here, we are going to discuss various clinical treatments for kidney stone removal.
PCNL (Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy) – It is a minimally invasive method of kidney stone removal. It uses spinal or general anaesthesia and is applicable in the case where kidney stones are larger than 2 cm. A tract is managed to settle with the kidney in order to insert Nephroscope into the kidney. Kidney stones are then broken down into small pieces and removed. A patient may be asked to stay for 1-2 days in the hospital.
Mini PCNL – This is also referred to as keyhole surgery as it includes making of very small incision for removing kidney stones. It also ensures minimal blood loss and fewer scars. Recovery is quite fast in this surgery and patient is required to spend the least time in the hospital.
RIRS (Retrograde Intra-Renal Surgery) - In this case, holmium laser is used to break the larger kidney stones and then they are removed in miniature baskets. This is a no-cut procedure. It includes insertion of ureteroscope into the kidney through the urinary passage and bladder. It increases the possibility of early recovery of patients as very less bleeding is involved.
URS (Uretero Renoscopy) – In extreme cases like when stones get stuck in the ureters, Uretero Renoscopy needs to be applied. In this procedure, the ureteroscope is passed through the urinary tract and again holmium laser is used for breaking the large kidney stones. These stones are then removed with the help of forceps. It is also a no-cut procedure and hence quite safe and leads to early recovery of the patient. In this procedure, a safety device called stent is used and placed in the ureter. It is removed later on with the consent of the doctor.
